If at possible buy both! You will not regret it. Her booklist is also excellent, and there is little overlap between the two. Her book is conversational, passionate, and a great read. Honey for a Child's Heart is equally good, but completely different in approach. Our school requires every parent to read this book. It's my standard baby gift now, accompanied by my favorite read alouds for toddlers. The Read Aloud Handbook is research-based, with tons of hints and tips and an excellent reading list. Another difference is that Read Aloud Handbook specifically discusses reading aloud, while Honey for a Child's Heart discusses loving literature in general (of course including reading aloud). You are correct in that The Read Aloud Handbook is secular and Honey for a Child's Heart is written by a Christian (though I would not think someone unreligious would be turned off by it).
